Tree Trimming & Pruning: Tips & Techniques

There are many effective trimming and pruning methods that will help keep your trees in top shape. With the right knowledge and tools, you can prune your trees to keep them looking great and healthy.

Tree trimming is often done for beauty, safety, and health. The following is an example:

Aesthetics: Pruning trees properly can improve their appearance and shape. However, you should not force a tree to take on an unusual shape or size. The amount of pruning and trimming that will be needed could cause it to be severely damaged.

Safety - Damaged or dead branches and limbs can easily fall, creating a serious safety risk. You should trim any tree branches that are obstructing your vision while driving. Health - Sometimes, a tree can be saved by strategically pruning away infected limbs and branches. A tree's crown can be thinned to improve airflow, which can prove very beneficial. To prevent branches from falling, it is important to trim or remove any branches that are rubbing or crossing each other.

General Guidelines for Tree Pruning

It is always best to prune or trim a tree in its dormant period. While a pine tree can still be pruned anytime, it is best to do so when it is dormant. The only exceptions are when there is danger.
Be aware of the size of the branch that you are removing. If it is less than five centimeters wide, it is fine. If the diameter is between 5 and 10 cm, you might not be able to do that. You should not perform this if the diameter is more than 10 cm.
Should only be cut branches with weak angles, such as V-shaped or narrow branches. Keep strong, U-shaped branches. The lateral branches should not exceed half to three-quarters of the stem's diameter at the point of attachment. If they are not, they should be removed.
After pruning is complete, the ratio of tree height to the living crown should be at least two-thirds.
Try to remove young branches. It's much easier to trim branches at this stage, and there is less chance of leaving unsightly scars.
It is not a good idea to trim a branch too closely or too long. It is not a good idea to remove the branch collar or leave a large stub.

The Crown is being thinned

Keep lateral branches as evenly spaced as possible, especially on young trees.

Take out branches that cross or run into adjacent branches.

Never remove more than one-quarter of a living Crown at a given time. You can remove more than this if you wait several years.

Raising the Crown

To make it easier for pedestrians or other purposes, you can lift the crown of a tree. Trees should be at least two-thirds their height when they have living branches. If too many branches are removed from the bottom half of the tree, it may not be strong enough to support a stem.

Reduced crown

If you have to remove more foliage than 50% from a branch, then take it all out.

If it is really necessary, only prune the crown of a tree. Take out lateral branches at least one-third of the stem.
